Sencha Architect 2 has been released. It is a drag and drop HTML5 app building tool that was created using Sencha's own HTML5 tools.

Making an HTML5 app just got easier. Sencha, a provider of HTML5 frameworks and tools for desktop and mobile application developers, just released Sencha Architect 2. Sencha Architect 2, is a HTML5 visual app builder that was created using Sencha’s own HTML5 tools. It includes full code editing capabilities and built-in one-click native packaging for iOS and Android that eases app deployment to Apple’s app store and Google Play.

I had the opportunity to ask the senior director of product management at Sencha, Aditya Bansod a few questions about the new release.

Why should every HTML5 developer and designer consider using Sencha Architect 2?
Every developer creating applications based on the Sencha Frameworks should consider Architect 2 as it accelerates development, provides a solid foundation for growth due to its code generation with built-in best practices, and reduces the amount of time a developer new to our technologies needs to become productive. Developers new to HTML5 will enjoy using Architect as a great way to learn how to use Sencha’s leading HTML5 tools.

What was the most challenging part of the Sencha Architect 2 development process?
Architect is a comprehensive product that aims to make life easy for developers so there were plenty of challenges along the way. The biggest was definitely to make sure that the application would make our frameworks accessible without taking away control from developers, a balance that we are confident we got right.

Can you tell us more about the Model-View-Controller pattern support that allows large app development teams to collaborate.
MVC is an established software pattern that we embraced because it enables larger teams to work more effectively on more complex products and simplifies code re-use. In the long term, maintainability of an MVC app is much, much easier.

Why did your team decide on using Sencha’s own HTML5 tools to create the Sencha Architect 2 app?
Architect 2 is proof of the maturity of our framework to tackle some of the most complex application building tasks that can be thrown at a dev team. We picked our technology because we were confident it would serve us well, and it helps us by providing a test bench to test new features and future evolutions of our frameworks.

What advice would you give to developers who are new to the Sencha HTML5 platform? Is Sencha Architect 2 all we need?
Developers new to the Sencha HTML5 Platform can take advantage of the numerious learning tools, tutorials, screencasts, and Sencha Architect to learn how to use the Platform. Using Sencha Architect 2, developers have all they need to build incredible apps using our Platform.

Will Sencha Architect replace Ext Designer in your Sencha Complete product?
Yes, Sencha Architect will replace Ext Designer.

Built-in one-click native packaging for iOS and Android sounds great. Do you have any examples of apps that were made with or only using Sencha Architect 2 that are currently available in an app store?
Not that we are aware of, Architect 2 GAs on 4/17. We expect to see many of them pretty soon after launch.

You wrote in a recent blog post “the latest set of Apple hardware has regressions compared to the iPad 2 including slower JavaScript performance. And with iOS 5.1, the removal (or breaking) of features that developers have trusted is a real letdown.” How does this affect Sencha Architect 2 specifically and other Sencha products? Will there be performance issues on the new iPad when using an app that was created with Sencha Architect 2?
That problem doesn’t affect Architect 2 specifically. Applications built with Sencha Touch 2 might encounter scenarios where some things are slower than they should be on the new iPad. This will happen regardless of the use of Architect (and from what we saw, even with native apps in some circumstances). There is a good probability that the solution to the performance woes of the iPad lie in optimizations at the OS level that Apple will probably release in the near future, and in further optimizations at the framework level for what concerns Sencha.

I would like to thank Sencha and Aditya Bansod for the information on their new product. What do you think of Sencha Architect 2? There is a free 30-day trial so give it test drive. If you make an app with it, post a link in the comments and we will take a look.

I had a web design client a few years ago who fell in love with a Flash website and he wanted something similar for his business. Sure, the website was attractive but I knew it wasn’t practical for what he wanted to achieve. Search engines hated Flash and from previous experience, I had learned that if you build it, they won’t come. I believe and still do that a business website built entirely in Flash will fail, which is rather obvious now but wasn’t back then. Fast forward to 2012 and now the Flash website my client wanted could be created and widely supported using HTML5 technologies. The HTML5 website would be search engine friendly, require less bandwidth, load fast, work on mobile devices like the iPad, and not require the user to download a plugin in order to see the site.

I have seen many HTML5 business websites launch recently. We are not talking about mom and pop stores either. Major brands are using HTML5. The best HTML5 business website I have seen so far is http://www.selagroup.com/. It is the corporate web portal for the Sela Group, a training, consultancy, and software development company. The website is HTML5 paradise! You start off in the Sela building lobby where you can hop on an elevator and instantly get to where you want to go. You will notice a lot of HTML5 animations but the site is so much more than animations. IE10, Firefox 11, Chrome 16+, and Safari are fully supported.

You have to try this website on a mobile device. I have an iPad and the site excels on it as the best HTML5 business website should. The website is touch-optimized and adds new functionality. Finger swipes are in!

A low cost supercomputing project made possible through HTML5 will help researchers study three molecules including, HIV-1 integrase, which is a promising target for an AIDS vaccine.

There is a volunteer computing project going on right now called “Social Docking” that is written entirely using HTML5 and is run completely within the web browser. It’s an initiative to find compounds of pharmaceutical interest towards AIDS and Alzheimers. All you have to do is visit this HTML5 app socialdocking.appspot.com and let the app be in your browser for about 10 minutes before closing it. You can open a new window to browse the web or do whatever you want on your computer during that time. The idea is to get the simulation to run for 3000 iterations. This low cost supercomputing project will help researchers study three molecules including, HIV-1 integrase, which is a promising target for an AIDS vaccine.

The advantage of socialdocking.appspot.com is that it is web-browser based (as opposed to client-based Folding@Home, SETI@Home, which use BOINC). It also integrates as a Facebook app at http://apps.facebook.com/socialdocking but ChemDoodle’s XHR level 2 doesn’t work when Facebook users have SSL enabled on their accounts. Eric Jang, the app’s creator, had to remove the WebGL-related things from ChemDoodle and modify it to use JQuery Pollen AJAX methods. Thanks to level 2 XHR to fetch chemical structures from SMILES strings + Web Workers, the virtual screening app automatically retrieves the next available job once it finishes docking one chemical. It can be run for $0 using Google App Engine’s free billing scheme. Right now, web browsers have not put a lot of effort towards implementing the subworkers specification of Web Workers because there are not many applications found for Web Workers. The hope is that cheap supercomputing projects like these will improve the attention Web Workers receives from web browsers.

Here is more on the science behind this great HTML5 app from the app’s creator Eric Jang.

Developing new drugs is super expensive. It takes a billion dollars and years of clinical trials for company like Pfizer to roll out a new drug into the market. One way that these companies save a lot of time and money is to use Virtual Screening – instead of testing every possible drug candidate in a test tube, they refine a massive database of chemicals by simulating the molecular physics that go on when a drug binds to a receptor. This is called the lock and key model, which states that if a ligand binds strongly to a receptor, it is likely to induce some kind of change with the receptor, and hopefully to some beneficial effect within the cell.

For this project, I am studying three molecules at the same time and trying to find ligands that bind strongly to them. The blue one on the left is HIV-1 integrase, which is a promising target for an AIDS vaccine because it is critical for the HIV virus integrate itself into the host’s DNA replication system. The second one is Acetylcholinesterase, which can be targeted for treating Alzheimersand other forms of dementia. Acetylcholinesterase breaks down a neurotransmitter, so I’m interested in targeting the inhibitor domain that hopefully will render Acetylcholinesterase inactive. Finally, the telomeric RNA quadruplex is a unique secondary structure that personally I have been interested in for some time because I’ve done research on the past with telomeres and G-quadruplexes. It would be really interesting to find some kind of chemical side chain that binds to the arm loops and can allow us to study its role in telomerase regulation and find out more about the topology of quadruplexes.

Please visit the Social Docking app. It might be the first practical distributed computing application that uses HTML5 Web Workers.

Learn how to buy and sell HTML5 code. Buyers get proven HTML5 code that performs well in multiple browsers while HTML5 sellers can make thousands with minimum work.

I needed a simple HTML5 web app for an educational website I own. I could have built the app from scratch which would have been fun but too time consuming. I enjoy learning but this project had to be completed in a hurry. I opted instead to buy HTML5 code from CodeCanyon where you can get HTML5 code for as cheap as $3.

Buying HTML5 Code

The beauty of buying HTML5 code on CodeCanyon is that the code has been run through its share of tests. HTML5 is still so new and always evolving that testing and debugging HTML5 code you write can be a challenge. Buying code is definitely a timesaver. Every HTML5 player, uploader, slider, and plugin comes with a list of compatible browsers. Under the item details you can see the changelog, current version, updates, features, author comments, and star rating. There are also tabs for FAQ and user comments. I love the comments section because it saves buyers and authors time. Buyers can easily ask the HTML5 author questions and point out bugs. Then the author can respond with the bug fix or answer that typically resolves the problem.

I purchased two items, the HTML5 Signature Pad to Image script and the RoyalSlider, a touch-enabled jQuery image gallery. Then I tied them together to make my kindergarten app. There are several improvements I plan on making but considering it only cost me only $18, the app turned out better than I expected.

Selling HTML5 Code

You can make a lot of money on CodeCanyon if you know a little HTML5. The best selling HTML5 code at the time of this post is a HTML5 Ajax contact form. It has made over $4000 in sales. If a simple contact form made that much it has to get you excited about what you could potentially earn with your own HTML5 script. According to Envato, the owner of CodeCanyon, top authors make between $20,000 and $50,000 per month. This means that some authors could earn over half a million dollars in one year. Wow!

Happy Holidays from the HTML5 Blog! This is my gift to you. A set of HTML5 Christmas logos. You will notice that I already incorporated one of the designs in my blog.

This set of free HTML5 holiday graphics was created by my wife, Lily Adams. She is the “Affordable Logo Designer” offerring logo designs for $39.

The HTML5 Christmas logo pack is available in three file formats. They are AI, EPS, and PDF. Download the free vectors here.

There are 4 HTML5 Christmas logo designs. The first is the simplest with a sleek Santa’s hat on the “5″ and snow on the HTML. The second has holiday lights and was made to look like a Christmas cookie. I was thinking about doing an HTML5 animation with the lights. The third holiday logo has candy canes. The fourth vector design has reindeer antlers and snow for that winter feel.

The vector graphics are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 United States license. Attribution for me is easy. Only do it if it makes sense to you. If not, just leave a comment wishing me a happy holiday. So it is time for me to do some attributing. The original HTML5 logo is from the W3C.

I wish you a happy and safe holiday season!

HTML5 has won because Adobe is stopping development on Flash Player for browsers on mobile. HTML5 is the future of mobile web applications.

I have good news and some bad news. The good news is that Flash is dead on mobile devices.

Adobe is stopping development on Flash Player for browsers on mobile.

This is the summary from an e-mail sent to Adobe partners on Tuesday evening that was obtained and first reported on by ZDNet. The other good news to come from this is that Adobe will be putting more money into their HTML5 aspirations. I have really enjoyed working with the free previews of Adobe Edge, their HTML5 animation software. Adobe should be releasing the commercial version of Edge in 2012. I am hoping more resources will be devoted to its development.

Here is the bad news from an Adobe press release.

In order to better align resources around Digital Media and Digital Marketing, Adobe is restructuring its business. This will result in the elimination of approximately 750 full-time positions primarily in North America and Europe.

I hate to see so many people lose their jobs. I have been downsized before and not just after a cold shower. I know what all of the Adobe employees who might be affected by this are feeling today. My hope is that many saw the writing on the wall a long time ago and planned ahead. I would imagine many started working on their HTML5 skills in 2010 after Steve Jobs released his thoughts on Flash where he said that Adobe should drop Flash and focus more on creating great HTML5 tools.

Here are 7 questions with two HTML5 game designers, Sean Lim & William Tan of GameYawp. Their most recent HTML5 game, Zombie Typomaniac is fantastic! This game is better than any Flash typing game I have ever played. Try it out and see for yourself.

Here they are: At GameYawp, we’ve recently launched our latest HTML5 game: Zombie Typomaniac. It’s a humorous typing shooter where the player types words to shoot a variety of zombies, surviving through different levels of zombies and unique zombie bosses. The game also features powerups that can freeze, slow down zombies etc.

The YouTube trailer of the game is at:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAqWTWH20Gk

The game itself is accessible here: http://apps.facebook.com/ZombieTypomaniac

What software, libraries, game engines, frameworks, etc… did you use to create Zombie Typomaniac? Why did you choose it/them?

Basically, we built the engine from scratch (there are not a lot of HTML5 engines out there today, so maybe we might release our engine in the future too!). Zombie Typomaniac was aimed at the broadest audience possible, so we had to sacrifice on some of the HTML5 features in order to achieve the broadest compatibility.

One of the biggest problems HTML5 game developers have had is working with audio. Your HTML5 game has wonderful sound effects. How did you do it?

HTML5 audio not that great performance-wise, and I think this is a challenge for many HTML5 developers. In Zombie Typomaniac, the game first detects whether Flash is available, then uses it for audio. If Flash is not available, then the game will fallback to HTML5 audio. Ideally we want to be able to just use HTML5 audio, so we’re still looking for technology that can help improve audio performance.

Why did you choose to launch your game on Facebook?

Launching on Facebook was a decision we made due to the popularity of the platform, the built-in profile management system (Facebook graph), and the potential user sharing to promote our game. However, the sheer number of games out there on Facebook, as well as the many established game developers, makes it a tough market. The silver lining for an indie developer is that technology factors (web browser computing power, network bandwidth etc) limit the use of multi-million dollar video and audio effects, so in some way, it’s a small but noticeable equalizer for this playing field.

What was the process of monetizing your game with Facebook credits?

Facebook credits being the standard mode of transactions for virtual goods is a good thing in my opinion. Not many people actually spend money on Facebook, regardless of the price of the virtual good. Having to enter credit card info is a huge barrier. Facebook credits lowers that barrier – ideally, as long as someone has purchased Facebook credits earlier, they should be more open to buying more Facebook credits, or using leftover credits to buy other virtual items.

What is your favorite thing about HTML5?

HTML5 builds on technologies already familiar to most web developers (HTML, JavaScript, DOM etc), and at least attempts to provide much better compatibilities across different browsers, potentially reaching across multiple platforms with minimal changes to the code base. With iOS, Android and PC platforms today, and more to come in the future, HTML5 is a great way to design once and apply on many platforms. What’s harder in HTML5 is the distribution channel. If you build an iOS game, you have access to Apple’s iTunes app store. For native PC games, there is Steam and others. There’s no clear winner for pure HTML5 apps yet. Google’s Chrome Store has potential, but needs more users. I’ve read about projects like Facebook’s project Spartan which actually sounds very exciting, so there definitely is huge potential for this technology.

What advice would you give a new HTML5 game developer?

For each small task, develop/optimize/test the solution to make sure it’s stable and works well across browsers. Then stick to these solutions to address even larger tasks. HTML5 is leading edge technology, and with that comes some technical challenges, but these can be overcome with a systematic approach to testing and moving forward. At the end of the day, HTML5 is a great means to get your idea from concept to reality, but don’t lose sight of the “fun factor” in your game. Utilize HTML5 to bring out the best in your game, so you can accomplish what’s not possible in 99% of the other browser games!

HTML5 isn’t finished but a lot of books about it are. Books written about HTML5 in 2010 may feel a little out of touch since the state of HTML5 is still under development. This is why my HTML5 Book Guide is only covering 2011 and 2012 HTML5 books. Learn about the best HTML5 books.

HTML5 Books for Beginners

This book is written by two of the more entertaining characters in the HTML5osphere, Bruce Lawson and Remy Sharp. It gives you a brief overview of why HTML5 exists and then dives into showing you how to start implementing the HTML5 language. This is the second edition which will be released October, 20th, 2011.
According to the title, if your an idiot and need a HTML5 guide, this is the book for you. This is not a book that is solely about HTML5. It is however a pleasant surprise for people who just starting to learn about the web in the year 2011. The book starts with a section on web hosting and finishes up teaching you how to make your web pages load faster. It even features a 16-page color insert and a “Speak Like a Geek” glossary.
This book has a nice angle and is terrific for HTML beginners.
If I had an intermediate HTML5 book category for my guide, this book would fit right in. Building web apps with JavaScript isn’t child’s play but the way the material is presented in this book could work for some HTML5 beginners. It gets released in October so the HTML5 covered should be fresh.
This step by step HTML5 guide is from Microsoft. Yes, Microsoft has an HTML5 book. They should as we just found out recently that are putting Flash out to pasture by closing the door on plugins with their release of Metro Internet Explorer In Windows 8. All the book’s practice files are ready to download and there is a fully searchable online edition of the book.
You may be required to purchase this book if you are taking a beginning web design or web development course. The price is higher than most if not all the other HTML5 books listed in my guide. The book is a sound teaching tool. There is even a website to go along with the book that has a page for each chapter with hyperlinks for websites listed in the book, information on emerging trends, additional examples, corrections, and review games. HTML5 teachers can pick up instructor materials from the publisher’s website.
There are 15 lessons in full color, supported by video tutorials and lesson files on the DVD which makes it easy to learn at your own pace. I love rewinding!

You could say that 2011 is the year of the HTML5 conference. There will have been more HTML5 conferences, workshops, and keynotes in 2011 than any previous year. The main reason is demand. HTML5 is just so darn popular. If the web was one giant high school, HTML5 would be student council president. Demand has been so crazy that even with the increased number of HTML5 conferences, tickets can be hard to come by.

I have made a list of HTML5 conferences for the rest of 2011. Highlights include the first HTML5 game conference, OnGameStart and Breaking Development, a conference that includes workshops on building native mobile apps with HTML5.

Many web related conferences will have at least some HTML5 on the agenda. A couple worth mentioning are the Adobe Max 2011 and the NAGW 2011. Even the 2011 Flash on the Beach conference will kickoff with two HTML5 workshops: “Using HTML5 & Javascript to Build Webapps” by Remy Sharp and “Intro to Creative Javascript and HTML5 Canvas” by See Lee-Delisle. Yes, a conference about “Flash” has HTML5 workshops.

Happy HTML5 Day. This year Adobe really helped advanced HTML5. We also have a new HTML5 logo. There is a lot to be excited about.

Today is the second annual HTML5 Day. It has to be true because I made a cake! Actually my wife made the cake. I ate the cake. It was good or as they use to say in In Living Color, “It was two snaps up and a circle”.

HTML5 has made great advancements over the past year. It even has an official logo now! A logo is important as you can see from the difference in HTML5 cakes via my HTML5 Flickr stream. You can even get HTML5 gear for you or that special someone in your life. Profits of every HTML5 shirt go to a good cause; the development of the HTML5 test suite.

Hopefully, you are going or are at Adobe’s HTML5 Camp at the Hudson Theater in New City today. Last year, HTML5 looked like it was going to bring down Adobe. Now it appears that it could be the other way around. The second largest piece of HTML5 cake goes to Adobe this year. They launched Adobe Edge, added HTML5 packs to Dreamweaver and Illustrator, and help create an “Adobe-curated” resource website for the advancement of HTML5 and CSS3.

I hope you have a safe and happy HTML5 Day!
